Abstract: Among European bogs the “Großes Moosbruch” area in Kaliningradskaja Oblast must rate as a very important one. Its coming into existence is closely related to changes of the Baltic Sea coast during the Holocene. Climatic conditions are determined by its location in the transition region between the southern and eastern Baltic regions having a rainfall of 700 mm/a. Along the neighbouring rivers fens developed followed by a small strip of poor fens. The central compact section consists of a high moor overlaying the fens and transition bogs below.
